Bellevue-based Pacific Sound Chorus will compete in the Sweet Adelines Region 13 a cappella contest for women’s choruses April 10-13, but under new rules governing the event in Spokane.
Regional boundaries have been redrawn this year. The region, which was formerly Alaska and Washington, now will also include Northern Oregon, Northern Idaho and Western Montana, adding eight choruses to the completion. Also new this year is the Open Division.
Previously all groups competed in the International Division to qualify to move on to the international competition by performing two contest-approved songs, and placement is based solely on judges’ scores. This year they may choose instead to compete in the Open Division by performing a 10-minute set which includes one contest-approved song and will be judged on entertainment value by audience vote.
Pacific Sound Chorus will perform a set in new Open Division, but as 2013 regional champions will be ineligible to win. However, as 2013 regional International Division champions, Pacific Sound Chorus already has qualified to compete in the international competition to be held in Baltimore, Md., in November of 2014.
Pacific Sound Chorus’ members range in age from their 20s to their 80s and are drawn from communities throughout the Puget Sound region from Olympia to Sequim.
Several members of Pacific Sound Chorus also will compete in the quartet competition on April 11.
Tag Time Quartet is Lisa Martin and Carol Ward of Pacific Sound Chorus along with Anna Martin and Nancy Burns, and they will compete in the International Division.
Kalliope Quartet is Karen Carter and Erika Isaacs of Pacific Sound Chorus along with Melissa Martin and Anna Chamberlain, and they will compete in the International Division.
Soiree Quartet is DianeLee and Michelle DeFreece of Pacific Sound Chorus along with Lora Ray and Marsha Kelly, and they will compete in the International Division.
