Mike Miller is keenly aware things have worked out pretty nicely for his Newport football team.

The Knights, at 5-4, knocked off Crown division No.2 Inglemoor 28-17 Friday in the KingCo 4A crossover playoffs. Because of that win, Newport claimed KingCo’s No.3 seed to the week 10 playoffs, while Eastlake and Issaquah (who both beat the Knights during the regular season), take home the No.4 and No.5 seeds.

“It worked out beautifully for us,” Miller said. “It was just a matter of taking care of business.”

Skyline took home the conference’s No.1 seed, while Bothell finished with the second seed.

Inglemoor (5-5) entered Friday’s game having won three-straight games. Like many opponents have this season, the Vikings jumped right on Newport, scoring on their opening drive when Mitchell Gunsolus hit Peter Meiusi for a 44-yard touchdown pass.

“We have a resilient team that has learned to bounce back from this type of deal,” said Miller. “I think these kids have realized that the games we’ve lost, we’ve lost to some really good teams. Now we’re going into games with confidence.”

The Knights rebounded with a 62-yard touchdown run from Eric Rodan to tie the game and, after an Inglemoor field goal, scored 21-straight points with touchdown runs from Rodan and Isaac Dotson and a touchdown pass from Dotson to Nate Anderson. Inglemoor added a fourth-quarter score for the game’s final margin.

Now, Newport faces off with Kentlake (7-2) Saturday at French Field in Kent. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Falcons losses this season have come to No.6 Kentwood and Auburn. The team runs a similar triple-option attack to Newport, but operates it out of the shotgun.

“They’ve got some athletes for sure, and they have a number of them,” said Miller, who also said his team is heading into the game relatively healthy. “They are in a tough team too. We’re definitely not in a position to overlook anybody.”
