Can there be a tastier way to celebrate community in the Lake Hills neighborhood than blueberries harvested from Bellevue’s farms? At the Lake Hills Neighborhood Association Blueberry Festival Saturday, Aug. 22, that noble fruit will come with live music, games and an open house for Lake Hills Elementary School.

Much of the action will be around “Blueberry Lane,” in the playground of the school (14310 SE 12th St.). Art will be on sale, along with produce and blueberry pies from Bill Pace Fruit and Produce, which operates the Mercer Slough Blueberry Farm.

The festival with a twist involves the city, the school district and local nonprofit organizations joining together for an event that addresses all kinds of community needs.

Local service providers will be on hand to provide assistance and information about a variety of human services programs. Free dental screenings and urgent dental care will be available on-site.

The open house at Lake Hills Elementary, 10 a.m. to noon, will be followed by one at Jubilee REACH Center (14200 SE 13th Pl.), which offers before- and after-school programming for kids.

In addition to the games and music, the event will feature free refreshments. Parking is limited, so visitors are encouraged to walk, ride the bus or carpool.

Lake Hills Elementary is home to the Wrap-Around Services Pilot Project, a collaboration of the city, the school district, United Way and the East Bellevue Community Council. The school is a hub for programs and services that meet the needs of area children and families.
