Original story
Interlake’s softball team made history on Wednesday, winning its first two games at the 3A Sea-King District softball tournament to punch a ticket to the 3A state tournament for the first time in school history.
The Saints got a complete game from sophomore Ashley Scott in the 13-3 win over West Seattle (5 inn.) in the opening round. Scott struck out six and walked only one, allowing four hits over the five innings to get the win.
Victoria George, Lauren Butrim and Erin Scott each had a two RBI game for Interlake.
Bainbridge, which earned a bye into the second round by virtue of its regular season in the Metro League, was waiting in the afternoon game and took a 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Saints rebounded with nine unanswered runs to pick up the win and ensure a trip to state.
Elder Scott sister Erin worked all seven innings on the mound in the second game of the day, striking out four in the win. None of the three runs allowed in the game were earned.
George, Butrim and sophomore Carly Pim did the work at the plate, knocking in five runs combined as Interlake put three up in the bottom half of the third before exploding for five runs in the fifth to take control.
Holy Names is the first opponent Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle, with the winner of another semi-final between Blanchet and Juanita also playing for a spot in the tournament final. The championship game and third-place game are slated for a 4 p.m. start.
The Saints, which participated in Class 2A the past four years, made the first state tournament appearance at any level last year, finishing the tournament with a 2-2 record.
The 3A state softball tournament is May 24-25 at Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
