The Newcastle Transit Center project is underway and the traffic detouring around the temporarily closed Coal Creek Parkway is jamming up.
During construction this week, Coal Creek Parkway traffic will be detoured onto Newcastle Way up to 133rd Avenue Southeast and back to the intersection of Coal Creek Parkway and 133rd Avenue Southeast. Delays are expected to increase commutes by approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Police will be directing traffic during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
If completed on schedule, Coal Creek Parkway will be reopened for the morning commute on Monday, July 27.
Improvements at the intersection of Newcastle Way and Coal Creek Parkway will include new curb ramps and realigned crosswalks.
The Newcastle Transit Center project, located along Newcastle Way between 129th Avenue Southeast and 132nd Place Southeast, will include improvements to bike lanes, 16-foot sidewalks with landscaped buffer zone, street lighting, bus zones with transit shelters, signing and pedestrian-scale lighting, and the placing of utilities underground.
In December 2006, the City of Newcastle entered into an agreement with Sound Transit for design and construction of the Newcastle Transit Center Project. The entire project will cost up to $4.6 million. Four million of the funds will be provided by Sound Transit and $0.6 million will be provided by the City.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2009.
Key: The detour route is in blue/indigo; the closed area of Coal Creek Parkway is red.
