Steve Litzow, R-Mercer Island, has been selected by his colleagues to serve as the ranking Republican member of the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee.

In this role, Litzow is responsible for keeping Republican senators apprised of bills referred to the education committee. In addition, he will work with the committee chair in scheduling bills for public hearings.

“Education is my number one priority as a legislator,” Litzow said. “During my campaign, I promised to put our schools first. I am honored that my colleagues have chosen me for this leadership role.”

Litzow has also been appointed to serve on the Senate Transportation Committee – another area of key interest to the senator.

“The major chokepoints in our state’s transportation system are centered around the 41st District on I-5, I-405 and I-90. These roadways can be a nightmare for commuters,” Litzow said.

Litzow’s third committee assignment is Financial Institutions, Housing and Insurance. This committee deals with a broad range of issues, including banks and credit unions, insurance companies and insurance fraud, mortgage brokers, the uniform commercial code, credit card marketing and technology, and consumer credit history.

The 2011 legislative session begins at noon on Jan. 10.
