Bellevue police arrested a man last month for mounting a camera on a Redmond ATM in an attempt to steal customers’ banking information.
The “skimming” suspect was taken into custody on Dec. 21 after he was seen taking the camera from the ATM by Bellevue police.
Bellevue police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate said in a press release that “more arrests may be coming.” Bellevue has been involved with skimming operations in recent months, taking part in a multi-agency bust in November.
The case began when Bellevue police received a tip from a bank in Redmond of a suspicious man tampering with the bank’s ATM. An eyewitness saw the suspect approach the ATM several days in a row. The bank representative requested police surveillance on the suspicion that the man suspect was returning to the ATM and skimming bank customers’ credit/debit card numbers.
As Bellevue detectives crafted a surveillance plan, they received a call from the bank representative that the suspicious male was at the ATM. Police officers arrived but the man was gone. Detectives located a small camera mounted on the ATM monitor. They maintained surveillance on the ATM for a few hours.
The male suspect returned to the ATM and removed the camera, and drove away. Detectives requested a Redmond patrol officer to assist with the traffic stop where the suspect was arrested without incident. The skimmer/camera device was located in the vehicle at the time of the arrest. The dollar amount lost in this particular case remains unknown.
The suspect was booked into King County Jail on theft charges and an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer.
