Interlake wins 2A State Title | Boys and Girls Golf

The Interlake boys golf team will be heading back to Bellevue with some hardware after winning the team scoring of the 2A state golf tournament in Spanaway with a total team score of 102, well ahead of second-place finisher Hockinson, who ended the tournament with 74 total team points.

Andrew Kennedy had the lead after the first round and ended the tournament in second by shooting a 72-78-150 for two rounds. Despite missing out on the individual title, Kennedy was pleased with helping his team to the scoring title.

“You have that drive to do well individually,” Kennedy said. “But you can also celebrate with your team.”

Andy Lui finished in a tie for eighth with a 77-80-157 and Patrick Sato tied for 14th with a 77-82-159.

“I was proud to represent a sports team that had success for Interlake,” Lui said. Sato added that while each of the three usually shy away from team sports, bringing a team scoring element into play added a sense of accomplishment not experienced in golf competition outside of high school.

Interlake Freshman Aleana Groenhout had a difficult second round after making the cut on day one, finishing in a tie for 29th place with a 188 (87, 101).

Katie Walker, Lizzie Norton and Ellen Howie also competed for the Saints on day one before missing the cut at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.

Nicole Lomax highlighted the day for the Newport girls golf team, which finished in fourth place in the team scoring with 68 points. Lomax ended the tournament in tie for seventh-place with a two round score of 153 (78, 75).  Isabel Chien shot a 162 (81,81) and Jessica Kent carded a 169 (85,84) for the Knights. Bellarmine Prep won the team scoring with 127 points and two top-ten finishers.
