Bellevue’s stated goal before the season was to beat another heralded out-of-state foe in Eueless-Trinity and finish the season undefeated to earn a fifth straight 3A state football title and tenth since 2001.
The Wolverines wrote the final historic chapter of the 2012 season on Friday in the Tacoma Dome and it was strikingly similar to the rest, as two Budda Baker touchdowns and a stifling defensive performance delivered a 35-3 win over Metro League champion Eastside Catholic.
Baker’s punt return for a score after the first Crusaders’ series of the game gave coach Butch Goncharoff’s squad a quick lead before senior quarterback Jack Meggs added another to push the lead to 14-3. A Myles Jack 95-yard run provided the signature finish for a team that has secured its place in both program and state prep history.
The offense and special teams provided the flash for the Wolverines, but it was again the defense that set the tone, suffocating an Eastside Catholic offense that entered the game averaging more than 46 points per contest.
Bellevue entered the game with a national ranking as high as two and could see its stock rise even further after yet another milestone win.
