A quick glance at the bracket for the 3A state tournament made me see the seemingly inevitable: Franklin and Bellevue look to be on a crash course.
The Quakers (24-1) and Wolverines (23-2) are on opposite sides of the bracket, and could only meet in the finals. Bellevue’s only in-state loss this season came on Saturday night to Franklin.
That’s the quick thought. But anything can happen in the tournament. A bounce this way, an injury that way, and everything can change.
But first Bellevue has to get past Foster (16-7) today, which has experience with upsets. Just two weeks ago, Foster upset Renton, 17-2 at the time, and forced the Indians into a loser-out game against Columbia River, who knocked them off.
Bellevue’s half of the bracket also includes a strong Union squad, Columbia River (featuring 6’10” stud big man Steven Bjornstad, a Nevada recruit) and the very same Rainier Beach team that Bellevue beat last Tuesday to clinch a state berth.
Franklin, on the other hand, drew the “Egg McMuffin” game, and will take on Shadle Park bright and early at 9 a.m. In fact, as you’re reading this, that game may already be over.
The Quakers half of the bracket features some tough teams in Lakes, Seattle Prep and Enumclaw, the SPSL 3A conference champions who are currently 22-2.
Although it’s a tournament and anything can happen, smart money says we’ll see a rematch of the Sea-King district championship game in the title game.
