They will lie together, in their individual urns, for eternity, these 209 individuals who were simply too poor to pay for their own burial.

Taxpayers are paying for their burial because no next of kin stepped forward to claim the body and pay for a funeral.

Wednesday, as it has done every two years or so, King County will bury these indigents at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Renton.

The program, known formally as the King County Indigent Burial, will cost about $150,000 this year. It is administered by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, part of Public Health – Seattle and King County.

The interfaith service at 1:30 p.m. is dignified, marking the lives of these 209 individuals – all known by name except for two – who have died in King County in the last two years.

The remains of one of those two individuals was found at a park in Seattle and turned over to police. The remains of the second were in an urn St. Vincent de Paul in Seattle turned over to police.

Mount Olivet Cemetery is at 100 Blaine Ave. N.E., just off Northeast Third Street in Renton.

Speakers at the service will include Gary Johnson, Prevention Division manager for Public Health – Seattle and King County, and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Richard Harruff. Presiding over the service is Chaplain Joel Ingebritson.

Offering prayers are Rev. Rick Reynolds, Operation Nightwatch Ministries; Linda Haptonstall, pastoral associate, St. Brendan Catholic Church; Father Mark Stehley, former Harborview chaplain; Rev. Susan Wanwig, past chaplain at the Compass Center; Rabbi Alan Cook, Temple Sinai, and Pastor Jeffrey L. Barker United Church of Christ

The Indigent Remains Program in King County began in 1993, when the state transferred responsibility for final disposition of unclaimed remains to counties. The program pays for cremation for an indigent – someone who lacks the ability to pay for the basic necessities of life – who has died in King County.

First, there’s a search for family members and a determination is made whether the person has the personal money to help pay for the funeral. Later, a family member can still claim the remains; each urn is marked with the individual’s name.
