Comments sought on light rail/comprehensive plan

The Bellevue City Council will seek comments from people about proposed changes to the city’s Comprehensive Plan and other recommendations related to developing a light rail system at a study session Monday at City Hall.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Conference Room, 1E-113, of Bellevue City Hall, at 450 110th Ave. N.E.

The proposed Comprehensive Plan amendments and other recommendations grew out of work by the Light Rail Best Practices Committee. The council-appointed panel spent nearly a year holding public meetings, studying light rail systems in North American cities, briefing the council on their progress and compiling a detailed report.

Sound Transit’s board of directors could ask voters in November to fund the East Link Light Rail Project, other rail extensions and more bus service. East Link would extend light rail from Seattle through Bellevue to Overlake.

In June, the Best Practices Committee released its final report, which includes recommendations for Comprehensive Plan amendments. The committee’s work is intended to prepare for light rail, if approved, and to put the city in position to influence future decisions.

Since the report was completed, the Bellevue Planning Commission has studied the committee’s recommendations and on July 9 it held a public hearing on proposed Comprehensive Plan amendments.

At its July 28 meeting, council members will consider the Planning Commission’s advice and provide the public an opportunity to comment on Comprehensive Plan amendments and other recommendations. The council is scheduled to adopt the amendments at their Aug. 4 meeting.
