Neighborhood groups that have launched donation drives or other projects to help residents in need during the recession will be honored at a community picnic on the lawn at City Hall on Saturday, Sept. 11.

All residents are invited to bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs to the Celebration of Service, noon to 2 p.m., on 110th Avenue Northeast between Northeast Fourth and Sixth streets. The free event will feature live music from Eric Moore and Two Scoops and free burrito lunches from Chipotle Mexican Grill to the first 500 people who come.

A “Kid Zone” with free activities for little ones and a volunteer resource fair will round out the day’s activities.

The event falls on the National Day of Service and Remembrance, and will include a short ceremony with Bellevue’s Honor Guard commemorating those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.

Through the Neighbor Link program the last two years, the city of Bellevue has facilitated efforts by neighborhood groups to help their fellow residents through the recession. This summer 20 neighborhoods have participated in Neighbor Link projects, including food drives and collections of necessities such as toiletries and school supplies for those in need.

The city, with contributions from corporate sponsor Chipotle, has offered support and resources for service projects, block parties and community-building efforts. All participating neighborhoods will be recognized, and awards will be presented in four categories for efforts that stood out.

The event will include an on-site food drive to benefit Hopelink. Non-perishable food items and cash donations are welcome.
