Sleeping resident wakes, escapes fire in Newcastle

A Newcastle resident was awakened by a neighbor as their home was consumed by a fire.

A sleeping Newcastle resident was awoken by a neighbor in time to escape their burning home in the 8800 block of 122nd Court NE on Monday evening.

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire and the home had no working smoke detectors, according to the Bellevue Fire Department, but one occupant of the home was inside when the fire began and was awakened by a neighbor in time to flee the burning home.

A cell phone caller first reported the fire just after 7:30 p.m. Monday evening and the Bellevue Fire Department had arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze less than 20 minutes later.

The cause of the fire, which did an estimated $200,000 in damage, remains under investigation. None of the four people who live in the home nor any of the firefighters from responding units were injured.

The Bellevue Fire Department urges all homeowners to check batteries in smoke detectors at least every six months to ensure they are in proper working order.
