Bellevue West teams stay in winners bracket

Both the 10 and 11-year-old squads from Bellevue West secured their spot in the second round with wins on Saturday

Update July 5, 9:45 a.m.: The Bellevue West 11-year-old All-Star team will face Redmond North tonight in the quarterfinals after defeating Sammamish 11-2 on Sunday. Bellevue East, which eliminated Thunderbird on Monday, will face Eastlake in a loser-out game at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

In the Juniors tournament, Thunderbird won their first two games over Redmond and Bellevue East/Bellevue West to move into the semi-finals against Mercer Island tonight at 6 p.m. at Newport High School. Bellevue East/Bellevue West rebounded from the defeat to Thunderbird to stay alive to face Redmond tomorrow at Newport.

On the softball diamond in the 11-year-old division, the combined Bel-West, Thunderbird and Mercer Island squad will face Issaquah/Sammamish tonight at 6 p.m. for a spot in the tournament finals.

The Thunderbird/Bellevue East squad is also still in the winners bracket in the 10-year-old bracket and will face Sno-Valley North on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for a spot in the finals.

Bel-West/Mercer Island will play tonight at 6 p.m. against Falls Little League in a loser-out game.

Both Bellevue West All-Star squads stayed in the winners bracket of their respective District 9 All-Star tournaments on Saturday.

The 10-year-old team from Bel-West sneaked past cross-town rival Thunderbird in a 9-6 victory to set up a Sunday date with Eastlake, who had a bye into the second round. The winner of that game will be only two wins from the championships series of the double-elimination tournament.

With the loss, Thunderbird finds themselves one win from elimination and will play again on Monday against the loser of a second round game between Mercer Island and Sammamish.

Sammamish earned their spot in the second round by defeating the 10-year-old squad from Bellevue East 9-4 in the first round of the tournament. The loss moves Bellevue East into a Sunday, 6 p.m. game against Kirkland American, which lost 14-2 to Mercer Island in the opening round.

In the 11-year-old tournament, Bel-West also had a difficult opening round game against another city foe, but prevailed over Bellevue East 11-9 to remain in the winners bracket Sunday. They will face Sammamish, which defeated Snoqualmie Valley 11-2, tomorrow at 3 p.m. again at Hidden Valley.

Bellevue East will face Snoqualmie Valley Sunday at 6 p.m. in a loser-out contest.

The Bellevue Reporter will have complete recaps and updates as both tournaments continue.
