After a season in which he caught more touchdown passes than any other Saint in history, Interlake junior wide receiver Dylan Amell hauled in another award as he was nominated for the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year.

Amell, who was nominated for the award by Interlake coach Sheldon Cross, is now among the players eligible to be named as the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year and featured in USA Today in February.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” Cross said. “Dylan should be up for and considered for every award possible. I don’t think even he truly understands what type of season he just had.”

Fifty players across the country also will be named national Players of the Year by Old Spice, and Amell also is eligible for one of those awards.

The junior wide receiver caught 70 passes this season for 1,421 yards and 18 touchdowns, all Interlake records. He helped the Saints rebound from a 2-8 record in 2007 to a 6-5 record and a 2A postseason berth.

Amell also broke an Interlake School record for touchdowns in a game when he caught five passes from quarterback Matt Malos in the Saints 53-48 Sept. 12 win over Yelm.

“What’s scary is the type of numbers and success for him next year,” Cross said.
