Bellevue Towers installs two sculptures by former Medina resident

Former Medina resident Julie Spedel was on hand Friday, Dec. 12 as two of her sculptures were installed at Bellevue Towers.

The sculptures mark the two entrances to the linked towers.

“The large vertical towers are offset by the human scale of these pieces that help to differentiate the two entrances and provide a counterpoint to the urban environment,” Spedel said.

Spedel, who attended Medina Elementary and now lives on Vashon Island, said she saw Mam-Kiya (Inca Moon Goddess) as the inspiration for the sculpture on Northeast Fourth Street and and Ruslaka (a group of Slavic water spirits) on Northeast Sixth as water spirits.

“They are strong but welcoming,” Spedel said.
