Eagle Scout project to benefit Seattle Humane Society

Nathan Hill is working on his Eagle Scout project like cats and dogs – well, cats, anyway.

The member of Bellevue’s Troop 438 is collecting dry cat food for the Seattle Humane Society, in Bellevue. He and other scouts and parents will be at several sites over the next few weeks, including:

Oct. 31 – Noon to 4 p.m. at Petco Issaquah, 957 NW Gilman Blvd.

Oct. 31 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at QFC Bellevue Village 10116 NE 8th St.

Nov. 7 – Petco Issaquah, 957 NW Gilam Blvd., Issaquah

Nov. 7 – Petco Factoria, 4080 Factoria Blvd. SE, Factoria

Mud Bay Pet Store at 13497 NE 20th St. in Bellevue has let Nathan place a donation bin at their store for dry cat for donations. In addition, his school, Eastside Preparatory School, in Kirkland, has allowed him to put up donation bins in the middle and high school buildings.

“I plan to collect dry cat food and monetary donations that will be donated to Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue,” Nathan said.

In 2009, the Seattle Humane Society has experienced a 4 percent increase of cats surrendered to the shelter. At the same time, Nathan noted that the Humane Society has been experiencing people donating less pet food this year. The Humane Society operates a Pet Food Bank for low-income seniors and for people with disabilities.

Nathan and his family used to foster kittens for the Kitsap County Humane Society and PAWS.

“We had to stop because we found out that I was allergic to cats,” Nathan said. “By collecting cat food and monetary donations, I can still help take care of cats and kittens. My goal is to collect more than 500 pounds of cat food and educate the public about what the Humane Society accomplishes, and how the public can support the Humane Society.”
