Current, former area preps picked in MLB Draft | Prep sports news

A pair of former area baseball players and a graduating Interlake senior were drafted in last week's MLB First Year Player Draft.

The 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft took place last week and a pair of former preps, along with a Class of 2013 player, were chosen.

2011 Newport grad Cole Wiper went at pick 310 to the Texas Rangers after a redshirt freshman season at the University of Oregon, where he helped the Ducks to the NCAA Tournament after missing the previous year recovering from an injury.

Another former Knight and current Washington State Cougar, Trace Tam Sing, went to the Kansas City Royals at pick 774.

Tam Sing, who was chosen after his senior year at Newport in 2010 in the 22nd round by the Boston Red Sox, spent 2013 with a Washington State team that finished 23-32 overall and 9-21 in Pac-12 play. He can elect to either return to Washington State for the 2014 season and take a chance at being drafted again, or sign with the Royals and begin his professional career.

Interlake’s Sam Finfer, a 2013 graduate, went to the Los Angeles Dodgers with pick 874.

Finfer was a critical piece of the 2011 and 2012 baseball teams for the Saints, both of which made the Class 2A state tournament.

A total of 34 players who played their high school or college baseball in Washington were selected, led by Kentwood senior catcher Reese McGuire, who was chosen 14th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Marco Gonzales from Gonzaga, a junior pitcher selected 19th by the St. Louis Cardinals.
