When Brett Mennella broke his leg last year, he missed not only the entire 2009 lacrosse season, but also his shot to impress Division I coaches across the country.
He’s more than making up for lost time this year.
Mennella scored six goals, four in the third quarter alone, to help Bellevue beat Puyallup 15-4 in boys lacrosse Tuesday night.
The win was Bellevue’s sixth in a row, setting up tonight’s showdown against rival Issaquah.
“We came out strong and we didn’t let up throughout the game,” said Mennella, a senior captain. “Sometimes this year we’ve had trouble in the third quarter, but not tonight.”
Mennella’s four third quarter goals came in a span of just five minutes. Two of the four came on beautiful assists from Thomas Spengler, who dodged his man and drove to the net.
“My guy slipped over to Tommy,” Mennella said, “and he looked backside and I was just wide open.”
Bellevue (11-0) jumped all over Puyallup early with seven straight goals, including three from senior Eric Omrie. Omri scored the first two goals of the game and had a hat trick before six minutes had even passed. All three shots were rockets that eluded Panthers goalie Zach Steedman.
“We shot the ball really well and that helped,” said Bellevue coach John Baumann. “We’ve come out early before and made goalies hot, but we came out and took care of a very good goalie but putting the ball in the back of the net early.”
Puyallup (6-5) finally cracked the scoresheet with a goal from Dean Morris halfway through the second quarter. But Bellevue stormed back with the big third quarter, putting up six goals to put the game out of reach.
“The offense was just moving the ball,” Mennella said. “We were dodging at the right times and exploiting the defense.”
The six goals gave Mennella 37 goals on the season, tops on the team.
Cole Nordstrom also scored three goals for the Wolverines. Spengler, Ryan Deal and Thomas Zervas each added goals for Bellevue.
The win sets up a huge home game tonight at 8 p.m. against Issaquah (9-1) on Bellevue’s senior night. The Wolverines are currently tied with Mercer Island for first place in the Northeast division, with Issaquah just one game behind.
“We were prepared for a battle tonight and we came out and dominated,” Baumann said. “That’s a real positive thing for us going in against Issaquah.”
