Newport splits pair

Newport split a pair of matches on the tennis court, beating Woodinville 4-3 before falling to 3A Mercer Island 5-2.

Angela Chen won the number one singles match against the Falcons and the Knights took all three of the doubles matches to get the win. Each of the four came in straight sets.

Chen, who has yet to drop a set on the season, won a 6-0, 6-0 match over Lydia Venditti of Mercer Island, but the Islanders took the remaining three singles matches and two of the doubles pairs to get the non-conference win among the two perennial state contenders.

Interlake 7 Sammamish 0

Isabelle Long, Lina Larson, Maggie Locke and Grace Hsieh all won straight-set matches in singles while the doubles pairs of Shayna McDonald and Melissa Long, Setareh Rock and Shreya Singh and Julia Liu and Vickie Zlatinova also picked up straight set wins.

Boys soccer

Bellevue 2 Interlake 1

The Wolverines got a leg-up in the postseason race over crosstown Interlake, 2-1 behind goals from Ryan Harber and Bennett Bugbee.

Chad Shapard put the Saints in front early before Harber scored on a free kick. Bugbee’s game winner came on a penalty kick in the second half.

Girls golf

Interlake 252 Lake Washington 284

Aleana Groenhout picked up medalist honors for Interlake with a 44 and senior Danielle Niemann shot 45 at Tam O’Shanter to help her team to the win.

Delaney Douglas, a freshman, carded a 48 for the final sub-50 round for the Saints.

Softball

Skyline 1 Newport 2

Kat Wood was the winner in the circle for the Knights with a complete game two-hit performance. Wood struck out six and did not walk a batter, allowing a run in the first inning before shutting out the Spartans the rest of the way.

Bridget Raftery and India Gants had the RBI for Newport, and Madelyn Shelby had a two-hit game in the win.
