Newport’s Chen, three from Interlake after individual titles at state | Prep sports news

The boys and girls tennis state championships begin this week and will include a trio of former state champs from Bellevue schools.

The tennis season comes to a conclusion later this week with the state championships and local preps will be in the mix for titles on the boys and girls side.

Newport senior Angela Chen will try and keep her record perfect on the season as she opens against Union’s Sydney Wallace. Chen has yet to drop a set, let alone a match, after returning to the singles court this season. She teamed with departed senior Amie Vo to win the 4A state girls doubles title in 2012. Isabelle Long of Interlake will meet the top seed from Districts 5 and 8 in the first round of the 3A girls singles tournament.

On the boys side, Newport’s David An and Alex Namba will open against Nate Stahley and Chad Wooten of Olympia. Dylan Harlow and Matt Sham will face Kyle Jiganti and Bjorn Brynestad from Gig Harbor.

In 3A, last year’s 2A singles champion Connor Garnett and defending runner-up and champion from 2011 Luat Le will try and keep a state title trophy at Interlake.

Garnett, who defeated Le in the 2A state singles final last year, will open against Dominik Gorecki of Columbia River while Le will meet Nick Eckern of Meadowdale.

Sammamish’s Ethan Romney will face Clarkston’s Ryan Adams for a spot in the second round of the 2A singles tournament.

State singles and doubles tennis tournaments are May 24-25. The 2A tournament is at Nordstrom Tennis Center at the University of Washington, the 3A tournament is at Tri City Court Club and Kamiakin High School in Kennewick and the 4A tournaments are at Columbia Basin Racquet Club and Richland High School in Richland.
