Bellevue council member John Chelminiak, who is recovering from a black bear attack that occurred near Lake Wenatchee several weeks ago, had to have his left eye removed because of a severe loss of vision, according to a city press release.

However, sight in the right eye is recovering, and Chelminiak has been able to read during recovery. He expects to regain sight for all normal activities from reading to writing to active sports like skiing.

Chelminiak had ophthalmology surgery on Sept. 24 and surgery for several major wounds on the left side of his body on Sept. 27. He continues to receive daily treatment for the wounds, which are healing well. His surgical team continues to monitor his progress and plan further surgeries.

Chelminiak’s condition has improved, and he is now up and walking around his hospital room and talking with family members. He’s also met with state officials to discuss the attack and aid in the investigation.
