Alex Ruan and Derek Ysang, juniors at Interlake High School, are finalists in a community grant competition.
The two founded American Youth for Equal Educational Opportunity (AYFEEO), which collects school supplies for students.
The competition, the @15 Community Impact Challenge, organized and sponsored by Best Buy and Ashoka’s Youth Venture, seeks to honor young social entrepreneurs for their work in their communities. Out of 15 finalists, five teams will receive a $5,000 grant and another five teams will receive a $1,500 grant.
Finalists were picked by Youth Venture, Best Buy, and last year’s competition’s winners. Grant recipients will be decided by a vote which started March 15 and will end April 2.
