Two residents escaped safely when a fire broke out in a downtown Bellevue condominium early Thursday morning.

Newly upgraded smoke detectors alerted two inhabitants to a fire at their Yarrowood condo in the 3500 block of 108th Ave. NE around 4:30 a.m. A fire had started in the furnace of the home and traveled though void spaces and utility chase ways to upper floors of the home, according to the fire department.

The first firefighters on the scene, who arrived in six minutes, reported smoke from the garage and began an offensive fire attack. With the support of additional fire crews, the firefighters brought the fire under control in 17 minutes. Firefighters opened up several walls and void spaces that had fire involvement. In all four fire engines, two ladder trucks, two battalion chiefs, two medic units and one Bellevue aid car responded, along with a few support companies.

No injuries were reported to occupants or firefighters. Firefighters estimate $50,000 damage to the home.
