Mary E. (Wight) Cadigan
Mary E. (Wight) Cadigan died peacefully on November 22 at the age of 81 at her home in Bellevue, Washington. Mary was born on Fox Island, Washington, to Arthur E. Wight and Nellie C. (Sweet) Wight on January 3, 1927. She attended a one-room schoolhouse on Fox Island, graduating from the eighth grade at age 12. She graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma at age 16. At the College of Puget Sound she became reacquainted with James E. Cadigan, a schoolmate from Stadium High. They married on November 26, 1946 and settled in the Tacoma-Seattle area where they raised four children. Mary’s joys were her family, gardening and her hiking activities. For a number of years she was active with the Issaquah Alps Trail Club, leading hikes and volunteering in projects, and remained active to nearly the end of her life with the Renton Ladies hiking group.She also enjoyed sewing, calligraphy, graphoanalysis and reading. She belonged to a book club whose members had been together for over 20 years, originating as a Toastmistress group. Over the years, Mary had volunteered as a reading tutor, visited the elderly in nursing homes and contacted donors for Puget Sound Blood Center. She quietly served her community in a variety of roles for a number of causes. Survivors include her husband, Jim, and her four children, Kathleen Cadigan Batie, James Cadigan, Jr., Helen Cadigan, and Douglas Cadigan, as well as a son-in-law Tom Batie, and two daughters-in-law, Jocelyne and Pandora. She is preceded in death by her brother, Chauncey and survived by her brother Arthur. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Kim, Carrie, Summer, James, Jonathan and Elizabeth and three great-grandchildren, Jack, Gracie and Chloe.Service will be Saturday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic Church, 4400 130th Place SE, Bellevue, WA 98006. Private burial will take place at Fox Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Nature Conservancy, Group Health Foundation, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
