Newport, Interlake earn academic state titles | Prep sports news

The Knights took the championship in girls swim and the Saints were recognized for academic excellence on the volleyball court.

A pair of local teams were among those recently named Academic State Champions by the WIAA for the 2013 fall season by virtue of their team grade point average.

Newport’s girls swim and dive team, coached by Eric Bartleson and with more counting participants (36) than any swim champion from another classification, took the 4A championship with a team GPA of 3.786.

Interlake picked up the honor in 3A volleyball with a 3.871 GPA for the 12 members of its varsity team.

Mercer Island’s boys cross country team was the only other KingCo squad in any classification to take the honor, which is awarded the team with the highest team GPA in its sport in the state.
