The Tyee Middle School Jazz Band was named the winner of a regional jazz festival last week.
The band was named the overall junior sweepstakes winner of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho on Feb. 23. They were chosen from seven bands competing in the young artist’s concert.
They performed the songs “Jazz at Five,” “Here’s that Rainy Day” and “Night and Day.”
The festival, held in Moscow, Idaho, featured three days of student competitions, workshops and clinics. More than 115 K-12 schools were in attendance from around the region, including nearly 400 soloists, combos and ensembles from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Canada.
As the sweepstakes winner, Tyee Middle School was presented with a rotating trophy for the year and will receive a free entry to next year’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
