The Bellevue Schools Foundation recently administered several donor-funded scholarships.

Sharon Zhang and Matthew McCord earned this year’s Carla B. Vendeland Scholarships, which recognize exceptional community service by Newport High School graduating seniors. Sharon worked on behalf of AARP Foundation’s fraud prevention services for seniors. Matthew mentored a younger student with a disability through Athletes for Kids.

Newport High School Parent Carla Vendeland created the PTSA Knight Valor program recognizing Newport students who made a difference in their community through their extraordinary volunteer efforts.

The Carla B. Vendeland Scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of Carla, and is administered by Bellevue Schools Foundation. The $1,000 scholarships are awarded to Knight Valor recipients who embody the dedication to community.

Graduating Sammamish High School seniors Jaylin Cabales, Keian Freshwater, Anthony Alvarez, Arthur Semionov, Eun-Sun Shin and Fotima Ibrokhim each earned a $1,000 Nan Campbell Scholarship for 2017.

Nan Campbell was Bellevue’s first female mayor, whose thoughtfulness and concern for others led to a long and broad contribution to human services and community activism. Her friend and neighbor, Suzy Mygatt Wakefield, established the scholarship fund with her husband, Jay Wakefield, to honor Campbell’s spirit of community. The recipients of this award embody that spirit.

Interlake High School grad Lukas Corey is the recipient of this year’s Howard Johnson’s Principal Scholarship. Established by Howard — the first Interlake High School principal (from 1966-1970)— this annual award honors a student who has demonstrated excellence in the study of mathematics, science and/or career and technical education (CTE) and intends to enroll in a post-secondary institution with a focus in these same subjects.

Johnson has been dedicated to education and to Bellevue public schools since he joined the district. His support is often demonstrated through contributions to Bellevue Schools Foundation.

Corey is the third student to be awarded the $3,600 Howard Johnson Principal’s Scholarship, which was designed to be awarded annually for 40 years.

Ngoc-Vy (Vy) Mai, a Bellevue High School graduate, was awarded the 2017 Debra Jean Muren Nursing Scholarship. Bellevue Schools Foundation officials said that Mai’s resilience and determination to become a patient care nurse truly honors the spirit of the award, a $3,000 scholarship payable over three years.

Debra Jean Muren was a dedicated direct care nurse and compassionate caregiver, as well as a Bellevue parent. After her death from early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2010, her family established the scholarship in her memory to support Bellevue students pursuing nursing degrees.
