Interlake Horticulture will host the annual Spring Plant Sale

The sale will take place May 3 and 4 and May 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Spring brings about visions of vibrant colors and warmer weather. The students of Interlake High School Horticulture in Bellevue have been enjoying the “warm” weather all year long.

They have been hard at work in the greenhouses growing annuals, perennials, edibles and much more. This year they will once again open their doors and celebrate Spring with their annual Spring Plant Sale.

The sale will take place May 3 and 4 and May 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event is located at the Interlake Horticulture Center located at 16245 NE 24th St., Bellevue. Students will be on hand to sell a large collection of plants as well as answer customer questions about plants.

The program specializes in mixed hanging baskets, coleus and one gallon heirloom tomato plants. In addition to their past offerings, the sale will also feature a wider selection of hardy perennials as well as houseplants to liven up the indoors. While the horticulture students sell growing plants the floral design students also open the flower shop to the public. Fresh floral arrangements will be available. Customers can pick up a pre-made arrangement or have a custom arrangement created on the spot.

The horticulture program was started in 1976 and has continued to be a mainstay of the Interlake culture. The center is the largest high school horticulture center in Western Washington. The program teaches students about running a horticulture business from seed to sale.

In 2015 Lisa Lindholm took the reins of the program and it is soaring. The program now offers a flower shop open to students and staff of the school as well as expanded the Spring Sale from one weekend to two. Proceeds from the sale are used to enhance the horticulture program. The intention is to simulate a state-of-the art grow/sell retail garden center and floral shop.
