There were dragons and knights at the Three Cedars Waldorf School in Bellevue last month as the school put on a Michaelmas pageant.

Michaelmas arose out of European pagan traditions celebrating equinox and then was carried further through the medieval Christian traditions to incorporate stories of saints, archangels and knights, and is now commonly associated with the beginning of autumn.

During the morning, the kindergartners donned their natural, hand-dyed silk capes and the elementary graders presented a series of demonstrations. The students’ courage was on display during the pageant, in which different classes played roles re-enacting the story of St. Michael and St. George subduing the Dragon (with supporting roles of meteor showers, villagers, knights, gnomes). Each year the third graders at the school create a many-legged dragon.

The day’s luncheon, or Harvest Feast, was prepared entirely by the Grade 1-8 students during the preceding week and celebrated local, organic, whole foods including handmade applesauce, butter, vegetable soup, rolls, pumpkin dessert, berry pie, and salad. The cooking assigned to each class is part of an integrated curriculum that emphasizes the importance of gardening and farming, food preparation and storage, practical arts and community building.
