The scoreboard hasn’t been kind to the Sammamish Totems football team during the 2018 season.
The Totems, who have lost all six of the games they’ve played this season, aren’t letting the losses affect their preparation or intensity as the season winds down. Sammamish senior quarterback Coby Akana, who has been the starter under center for the past two seasons, said the mindset of the team has remained upbeat since the first day of practice in August.
“I just love playing football. I know my guys know that. Week after week it has been disappointing and unfortunate,” Akana said of the string of defeats. “We lost a few of our key guys (due to injuries) but we all just look forward to practices and games. We enjoy playing this game. We’ve had a lot of fun the past couple of weeks regardless of the score. You don’t get a lot of opportunities to play football like this. The guys understand that. It is fun being out here.”
Akana said his ability to manage a game has grown exponentially since the beginning of the 2017 season.
“I think I’ve grown a lot. I definitely feel more confident going into games. This year I didn’t get to throw as much as I did last year and that’s because of the game plan. We needed to run the ball we’ve put an emphasis on it all year,” he said.
Recently the Bellevue Reporter had an opportunity to ask Akana a few questions about his life away from the football field.
Bellevue Reporter: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Coby Akana: It has to be “Lilo and Stich.” It has always been a childhood favorite of mine.
BR: What is your biggest pet peeve?
CA: I don’t really enjoy when people talk over other people. I find it distracting and it bothers me.
BR: What is your favorite hobby away from football?
CA: I play a lot of guitar. I like to do a lot of things with music. It is a big part of my family and is something I grew interested in.
BR: Who was your favorite sports team growing up?
CA: I always liked the Seattle Seahawks. Recently I have been a little bit of a Tennessee Titans fan because of Marcus Mariota (NFL quarterback).
BR: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?
CA: Denzel Washington.
BR: What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
CA: “Mission: Impossible.” It was pretty unrealistic but it was fun to watch.
BR: What kind of music are you listening to right now in your car?
CA: I listen to reggae. I like a lot of island style kind of music. I like upbeat music. It gets my energy going.
BR: Where do you see yourself in five years?
CA: I see myself attending a university. Hopefully I’m playing football.
