Bellevue-area residents can learn more about King County’s plan to replace the aging Factoria Recycling and Transfer Station at a community meeting, Aug. 17.

The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks’ Solid Waste Division is sponsoring the meeting, which runs from 6-8 p.m. at the East Shore Unitarian Church, 12700 SE 32nd St., Bellevue, just half a mile west of the station. Division staff will give a presentation starting at 6:30 p.m., with an open house before and after the presentation to allow for one-on-one discussions.

Staff will be at the community meeting to update area residents, business owners, facility users and other interested parties on progress to replace the station, which was built in the mid-1960s and is operating beyond its designed capacity.

A new recycling and transfer station will:

● Meet current building and environmental standards;

● Include room for collecting recyclable materials such as yard waste, clean wood, appliances, and scrap metal;

● Have the ability to compact waste, which will decrease the number of transfer trailer truck trips required to and from the station; and

● Accommodate projected future growth in the region.

Construction is expected to start in mid-2013 and take about 18 months to complete.
