When it was all over, the Sammamish Totems girls golf team stopped for a celebratory dinner at The Red Pickle in Ellensburg on its way home from the Class 2A state golf tournament in Liberty Lake.

The Totems, who won the Class 2A state golf team title for the second consecutive season, compiled 107.5 team points on May 22 at the MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake. The entire Totems roster was jovial throughout the 289-mile journey home with the state championship trophy in its possession.

Sammamish head coach Annette LaBissoniere said she had complete confidence her squad could win back-to-back state titles when practices commenced in late February.

“I told them three months ago at the start of the season when we talked about goals that they should set their goals high. They were completely capable of winning state again. I think they kind of doubted me at first, but I think after a couple of matches, they settled in. It was awesome to see what they accomplished,” LaBissoniere said during a phone interview from Ellensburg on May 22.

The Totems girls golf program not only has now won two state titles in row, they’ve also won three consecutive district championships. Mehr Luthra captured seventh place individually at the state tournament, compiling 161 total strokes during the two-day tourney. McKenna Lamb earned 10th place individually, totaling 165 strokes. Mikaela Ikeda finished in 17th place (174 strokes) and Sierra Hopper captured 20th place (178 strokes).

“They played steady the whole weekend. McKenna (Lamb) was a rock star. She is our senior and has been playing well all year. Mehr (Luthra) has been steady all year. She had our No. 1 average all year. The key to the tournament was four of them got through the cut (the first day of the tourney) and they all ended shooting in the 80s. It was awesome,” LaBissoniere said.
