A Bellevue man has died after he was involved in a crash with a car while riding his bike on Sunday, Sept. 22, police said.
The crash happened at about 5:45 p.m., when a 72-year-old cyclist entered onto Southeast 8th Street from 145th Avenue Southeast. He was struck by a vehicle traveling west on 8th Street.
The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center after crashing into the car’s windshield. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet and was unconscious following the impact.
The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old Kenmore man, remained at the scene. He was not found to be impaired by alcohol or a controlled substance, police said.
The cyclist died early Monday, Sept. 23, according to police. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office listed multiple blunt force injuries as the cause of death and accident as the manner of death. They identified the deceased as Enrique Ponce.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Spokesperson Meeghan Black with the Bellevue PD said crash scene investigators are reconstructing the accident and collecting footage to piece together what happened.
It is the second fatal accident involving a car and a bike in Bellevue this year. On Aug. 14, a driver turned into a man on a bicycle. The driver said sunshine was a factor of the early morning crash.
A 33-year-old Bellevue man died as a result of the collision on Northeast 8th and 134th Avenue Northeast. The investigation into the late summer collision remains ongoing.
