Bellevue police chief to host virtual town hall to address bias and hate crimes

The meeting is in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and will be in English and Mandarin.

Bellevue Police Chief Steve Mylett will host a virtual town hall meeting from 2-3 p.m. on April 2 to address the public’s concerns about hate crimes and/or bias-related incidents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a Bellevue Police Department (BPD) flier, Mylett is monitoring the situation and wants to hear from anyone who has questions, concerns or anyone who has been negatively impacted due to a hate crime or bias-related event.

Bellevue residents of Chinese heritage have recently contact Mylett, alerting him of these types of incidents and the chief wants to hear directly from members of the public, the flier states.

During the virtual town hall, Mylett and BPD Det. Zhong Zhu will outline the steps to report crimes and incidents. Members of the public will also have the opportunity to ask questions and learn what to do if they are victimized or witness a bias incident or hate crime, the flier states.

Questions and concerns can be emailed to informchief@bellevuewa.gov.

The virtual town hall will be available on the city of Bellevue’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/bellevuetelevision or on BTV on cable channel 21.

The meeting will be in English and Mandarin and a translator will be available to translate questions sent in through the email.
