Knights making playoff push
Newport bolstered its Crown Division title hopes on the softball diamond with a pair of blowout wins. The Knights, owners of a five-game winning streak with a 2-1 win over Skyline Wednesday, blasted Eastlake 15-5 and opened this week with a 13-0 win over Roosevelt.
Those came on the heels of one-run wins over Issaquah and Ballard.
Newport will meet Bothell to close out the week on Friday. The Knights are currently in the driver’s seat for the division title, two full games ahead of second-place Ballard.
None of the other four teams in the division have a record above .500, and the top four from the Crest and Crown will make the 4A KingCo softball tournament in late May.
In 3A/2A KingCo, Interlake is in position to make a run at third-place Mount Si while Bellevue, at 2-8 in Kingco play, will look to improve its seed down the stretch.
2A Lake Washington is unbeaten in conference play and has clinched the league’s only 2A playoff berth.
Interlake, Bellevue battling for postseason spot on soccer field
Only five of the six 3A classified teams in KingCo will make it to the conference tournament on May 7 and a pair of Bellevue teams look to be the ones jockeying for that position.
Bellevue currently sits two points in front of Interlake, with one more win to its credit and beat the Saints 2-1 in their meeting on Tuesday behind goals from Ryan Harber and Bennett Bugbee. The two will not meet again in the season’s final two weeks.
Sammamish, at 3-5-3 in the league, has already locked up the District 1/2 tournament with the Lake Washington still winless. That tournament begins May 4 and will pit the Totems against the second seeded team from the 2A Northwest Conference.
Newport has a record of 4-3-1 in 4A KingCo play with two games to go, the first on Friday at Bothell.
The Knights will finish the regular season at Woodinville and currently sit in sixth place.
The top six teams in the regular season will make the 4A KingCo tournament, with the top two earning automatic state tournament berths and the final four playing for a shot at the third-place finisher from Wesco.
