Newport scored four runs in the first and four more in the second, jumping on the Garfield Bulldogs early and not relenting until they had earned a 14-4 league victory in five innings on Tuesday.
Freshman Kaitlin Sahlinger picked up the win for Newport, allowing three hits and four runs over the five innings. Danae Greenfield went 2-2 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI while Indiana Coxey contributed with a 2-4 day, knocking in two and scoring a pair of runs herself.
The win takes Newport to 5-1 on the year with the lone loss coming in the season opener against Bellevue.
Coach Bree Lewis and the Knights will be back in action on the road Wednesday against Eastlake with a scheduled start time of 4 p.m.
Wolverines hang 20, strand winless Islanders
The Bellevue softball team got to Mercer Island pitcher Charlotte Pearman to the tune of 18 hits and 20 runs (nine earned) over six innings and beat the Islanders by a final score of 20-7 on Tuesday at the South Mercer Playfields.
Bellevue pitcher Emily Fleischman struck out nine over three innings while Anjani Briggs, Lisa Bennett, Maddie Smith, Katie Savard, Taylor Cooke and Sarah Yamuhara each had multiple hits as the Wolverines poured it on against the winless Islanders.
Saints stifled by Patriots
The Liberty Patriots used 13 hits and six runs to overcome four errors in the field and earn a 6-3 win over the Interlake Saints in a 3A/2A KingCo softball game on Tuesday.
The loss takes the Saints to 5-4 on the season and 3-3 in league competition. They will face Lake Washington at 4:30 p.m. at home on Thursday.
Bellevue tennis takes six of seven from Juanita
The Wolverines were nearly perfect on Tuesday against Juanita on the tennis courts, winning six of the seven matches from the Rebels behind flawless singles play and a strong showing from their pairs in doubles matches, taking two of three.
London Lee, Sabrina Tu, Anya Rubinstein and Karen Park each won in singles play and none dropped more than two games to their opponent with all four winning in straight sets.
The doubles pairs of Megan Urquhart and Michelle Han (6-2, 6-2) as well as Gracie Odegard and Nicole Baqai (6-1, 6-3) were also victorious for the Wolverines, who have won both of their matches thus far this season.
