Punching the clock: Regardless of results, Totems come to work every single day for Cabales

Coach Jessica Cabales and the Totems are focusing on growing their skills and working towards a brighter future.

The first two weeks of the season have not went exactly according to plan for the Sammamish softball team.

But that doesn’t mean coach Jessica Cabales and her team are hitting the panic button just yet.

With only a nine-player roster, Coach Cabales and the Totems are focusing their energy on making small improvements they hope will eventually lead to some positive results.

With nearly three-fourths of their games remaining and only two league contests under their belt, the Totems have plenty of time to right the ship on the 2011 season after a difficult start.

“We’re working on baby-steps, Cabales said. “I’ve got a great group of kids that are working to improve every single day.”

A 1996 alum of Sammamish, Cabales has been continuously involved with the softball program since her freshman year of high school in 1992. She became an assistant in 1997 and took over the head job in 2009.

“We’ve had our challenges of course, but it’s looking good for us,” said the coach. “We’ve got a positive group.”

With a heavy dose of wet weather forcing them inside for a majority of their early season workouts, Cabales said her team has been developing some of the fundamental elements of the game.

“Right now, we just want to make sure we are improving our skills individually and as a team.”

Despite the early hardships in 2011, Cabales and her players aren’t backing away from the challenge and the coach knows there is no other place she would rather be. “I don’t want to go anywhere else, I love it here.”
