The YMCA will break ground Sept. 9 on a new facility in the Coal Creek area of Newcastle. It is one of three projects either under construction now or planned in the greater Seattle area.

The Coal Creek facility, as the other two, will be a state-of-the-art facility with 50,000 square feet, a fully accessible swimming pool, gym, teaching kitchen, teen center, community meeting spaces and health and wellness facilities for those of all ages, interests and abilities.

It is the first time in the YMCA’s history that the organization is building three facilities at the same time.

“We considered very carefully where to build our new facilities,” said Matt Griffin, co-chair of the “It’s All About Community!” Capital Campaign. “These three new YMCAs will allow people in communities that currently lack key resources to have access to the quality health, wellness and social service programs the YMCA of Greater Seattle is known for.”

The YMCA has facilities in Bellevue on Bel-Red Road and in the Factoria area.

The Coal Creek YMCA in Newcastle will serve south Bellevue, north Renton, southeast Issaquah, Newcastle and Mercer Island. It will be located on Newcastle Golf Club Road near 136th Ave. S.E.

In addition to the new facilities, the YMCA capital campaign also has raised money to expand and improve the YMCA’s two resident camps, Camp Orkila and Camp Colman; remodel and add to a teen center at the Meredith Mathews East Madison YMCA in Seattle’s Central District (completed earlier this year); and a camp endowment fund, with matching support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to increase scholarships to low-income children for year-round camping and outdoor environmental education.

The campaign has raised 85 percent of its $40 million goal.
