Bellevue girls help win soccer title

The Eastside FC Girls 98 Red soccer team recently won the premier division of the U13 Mustang Stampede Tournament in Danville, Calif. The team won five of the six games it played over three days, allowing only a single goal in the process and defeating Santa Rosa United Ice in the championship match.

The team is coached by Michelle French. Team members Catie Buck, Katie Foster, Sophie Butterfield, Joanna Harber, Ellie Bryant and Maud van der Kooi live in Bellevue and attend Chinook Middle School.

Kim Shek wins EWGA championship

Kim Shek of Bellevue had never played the golf course at Palouse Ridge Country Club in Pullman before last Friday’s practice round of the EWGA regional championships.

That didn’t stop here from shooting a 77 en route to winning the title and qualifying for the championship finals in Palm Desert, Calif. in Oct.

Shek cited course management and consistent ability to hit straight drives as key to her successful round.

Local youth wins roller skating gold

Esha Harwalkar of Bellevue won the gold medal in the juvenile B loops and figure combined event and a silver medal in the figure event at the USA Roller Sports national championships in Fort Wayne, Ind. Harwalkar won four regional championships in Portland, Ore. to qualify for the national event.

Wolverines have new baseball coach

Pete Wilkinson, the founder of Wilkinson Baseball Academy in Lynnwood and a former high school coach in Wash. and Calif. has been named to the head position for the Bellevue Wolverines baseball program.

Wilkinson boasts an impressive list of accolades as a former player at USC and national baseball consultant.

“I’m really excited with where they are trying to go with the program,” Wilkinson said. “I don’t just want to have a team, I want to build a program.”

Wilkinson spent 2010 working with the pitching staff at 3A state champion Mount Si, He will take over a Bellevue program that finished its 2010 season in the 3A KingCo tournament with a 1-0 loss to Sammamish.

Richard’s Run coming in Sept.

On Sept. 24, runners and walkers from around the area are invited to participate in Richard’s Run 5K, which will raise money to benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital and Go4theGoal, which provides services to children with cancer and their families.

The run begins at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 8398 Northeast 12th St. in Medina at 8:30 am and cost is $25 for an individual and $50 for a family.

Trip to Dominican Republic is eye-opener

Nolan Watson of Bellevue and Chase Kairis of North Bend recently traveled to Santa Domingo in the Dominican Republic as a part of a USA Baseball tournament designed to give American youths a taste of international baseball.
