Newport aces headed to Pac-12 rivals

Both Bellevue-area prep baseball players who were selected in the MLB first year player draft have elected instead to head to the Pac-12.

Neither Jared Fisher and Cole Wiper will be beginning their professional baseball careers just yet.

Wiper was unable to reach an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays and will instead play for coach George Horton and the University of Oregon, where he began classes earlier this week.

Fisher, who was selected by the Houston Astros, was also unable to get a deal done and will play baseball and study at the University of Washington.

“Even though I would have liked to get my pro career started, I can’t go wrong with a few years of Pac-12 baseball,” Fisher said, adding he is excited for the opportunity Washington presents. Players who elect to play baseball at a four-year college are not again eligible to be selected until they have completed their junior or senior year of college or are 21 years old.
