Gavin MacGarva of Bellevue finished fourth in his graduating class at the U.S. Naval Academy.

He received his diploma and commission from President Barack Obama. He is also one of only 20 2009 USNA graduates to attend graduate school right after graduation. He will attend Stanford in September to work on a masters degree in aeronautical engineering. Then he goes on to flight school. Gavin is a 2005 graduate of Bellevue High School. He is the son of Greg and Nina MacGarva.

Ellen R. Engberg of Bellevue received a Master of Science in Geology from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. on May 2.

Elliott Benjamin Kalin and Jennifer Diane Kellogg, both of Bellevue, have been named to the dean’s list at the University of Idaho for spring semester.

To be named to the list, undergraduate students earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better on 12 or more graded credits.

Matt Anderson, a junior at Newport High School, was one of only six college-bound students in Washington and one of 268 in the U.S. and abroad to achieve a 36, the highest possible composite score, on the April 2009 national ACT test. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a score of 36 varies from test to test, less than one-tenth of one percent achieve the top score.

In a letter recognizing the achievement, ACT Chief Executive Officer Richard L. Ferguson pointed out that Matt should have a choice of the widest possible range of future educational options. ACT scores are accepted by all US colleges and universities.

He is the son of Mark and Susan Anderson of Bellevue.

David Hendrickson of Bellevue has graduated from Pomona College with a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience.

While a student at Pomona, Hendrickson was captain of the men’s swim team, setting team records in 500 and 1000 freestyles, and president of the sailing club.

He is the son of Mark and Mary Hendrickson. Hendrickson is a graduate of Newport High School.

Eton School celebrated “Peace Begins with Me” as its all-school theme this year. The children learned that peace is a gift and there are many places where they can go, inwardly or externally, to find peace. Recently student shared “Peace is white flowers and doves.” “Peace is quiet time.” “Peace is spending time with my friends.”

The annual themed hand-painted 4’X10’mural has been completed by Eton School Student Council members. The mural was unveiled at the all-school variety show on Monday, June 8. Past murals are on permanent display on the interior of the fence surrounding the school playground.

Two students from Bellevue have made the dean’s list at the University of Portland.

Elizabeth D’Amelio-Bidleman, sophomore, is majoring in biology; Amber Giordano, sophomore, is majoring in nursing.

Students need at least a 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for the dean’s list.

Jeff Powell of Bellevue was a finalist to be a host of the Seattle Opera’s “Confessions of a First-Time Operagoer.”

He was one of 49 applications over the past several weeks to star in the new reality-style video project about his or her first Ring cycle experience. Powell, who works for Expedia, was one of the five finalists.
