Bellevue firefighters made quick work in putting out a small kitchen fire in southeast Bellevue on Thursday afternoon. Occupants in the rental home were cooking when a pan with about two inches of oil burst into flames. A resident’s initial attempt to extinguish the fire with a cup of water failed.
The fire first reported at 3:38 p.m. occurred in the 14100 Block of SE Allen Road.
The three occupants called 911 and left the house. The first firefighters to arrive were able to cover and smother the burning oil and extinguish a small amount of fire on the surrounding cabinets.
Damage is estimated at $20,000 and the house remains tenable.
The initial attempt at extinguishment brings to light the importance of knowing the proper steps for dealing with a stovetop fire. Never attempt to extinguish a hot oil fire with water. Instead, attempt to use a lid or metal pan to smother the flames.
