This past school year, the St. Thomas School sixth graders initiated a Clean Air Campaign designed to tackle the growing problem of air pollution in the community. A series of community “challenges” throughout the year earned STS Level 2 status with Washington Green Schools.

The student Field Trip Mitigation Team restructured transportation for grade level field trips using the King County Metro system instead of parent drivers, reducing vehicle emissions, and potentially reducing fuel consumption by as much as 300 gallons per year. Students also created a Bike to Work Month program that included a Bike to School Day, resulting in a 200 percent increase in ridership at its peak and leveling off to a ridership of about 20 percent%.

The Sixth Graders also promoted an educational no-idling policy during student drop-off and pickup. Finally, the community was challenged to carpool through the utilization of a Google-based mapping tool easily connecting community members.

St. Thomas School has been an active participant of the Washington Green Schools program since 2009.
