A new public-private program will recognize businesses that encourage employees to avoid solo-driving commutes in favor of carpools, mass transit, bicycling, and other forms of transportation.

The Community Leader program, launched Nov. 16, is a public-private partnership aimed at reducing congestion and pollution. It expands on a similar Commute Advantage program that’s been in place since 2007.

Around 100 downtown Bellevue employers have participated in Commute Advantage workshops and consultations. Forty-two employers have revised their parking and commute programs as a result, and more than 10,000 of the 40,000 employees who work downtown now have transit passes partially of fully paid for by their employers.

Organizers of the Community Leader program estimate that 50 companies supporting changes in their employees’ commuting habits could take 200 solo drivers off the road, save $450,000 in parking fees, and reduce carbon emissions by 650 tons.
