Dedicated. Loyal. Funny. Loving.
That’s how friends say they will remember John Fullerton, the long-time Newport teacher and coach who died Friday at age 67 after suffering a heart attack while fishing in Brewster, Wash.
Fullerton, they say, was a man full of life, a man who deeply loved his wife Sharon, and a man who cared more about teaching and coaching than the skill level of the athlete.
“He was there for everybody,” said Colleen Martin, a former javelin thrower under Fullerton, who later returned at his behest to coach javelin alongside him at Newport. “He pu
Sometimes the bounces go your way, and sometimes they don’t.
Wednesday night, the bounces went Juanita’s way.
The Rebels scored a quirky goal in the 76th minute and held on to beat Sammamish 1-0 in the championship game of the KingCo 3A tournament in Bellevue.
With the win, Juanita moves on Saturday to face the No. 3 team from the Metro League at 6 p.m. in Kirkland.
“Historically, Juanita has been in last place forever,” said Rebels coach John Mach. “This is history that happened here tonight.”
Thanks to several strong individual performances, the Bellevue boys and girls cross country teams swept the conference championships Oct. 22 at Lake Sammamish State Park.
The Bellevue boys dominated the competition, beating second-place Mercer Island by 46 points.
Newport’s bid to take the final crossover playoff spot in the Crest Division fell short last night, as the Knights lost to Eastlake 14-7 in the second and deciding mini-game at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland.
The Knights, missing leading rusher Louie Jachim due to an injury in the final regular season against Issaquah, could not convert a fourth-and-two on the Eastlake 41-yard line on their final drive of the game with just over a minute left.
“They poured their hearts out out there,” said Newport coach Mike Miller after the game. “A great, absolutely wonderful effort by a lot of guys.”

For six weeks, Will Fields sat on the sidelines and watched his Bellevue teammates battle through to a 5-2 overall record. Out with a leg injury since the Wolverines week two loss to Katy, Texas, Fields had a lot of pent-up energy.
He released it all Friday night against Liberty.
Fields broke a 7-7 tie by scooping up a Jake Bainton fumble and returning it 55 yards for a touchdown, and Bellevue’s defense came up huge on the last drive of the game to help the No. 3 Wolverines beat No. 2 Liberty 27-21.
When Newport freshman football player Brent Spurgeon looks into the stands, he sees many people pulling for him.
He sees his mom, Catherine Spurgeon. Most games he sees Mira, his sister, seated right next to her.
He sees Debbie Altomare – or Mrs. Deb, as he calls her – his tutor, sitting there as well. Next to her is her husband, Ralph. And next to him is the Altomare’s youngest son David, Brent’s friend, coach and personal trainer.
When Brent Spurgeon looks into the stands, he sees an entire set of family cheering for him.
The only person he doesn’t see, well, that person is the reason he plays.
His dad.

The stakes couldn’t have been higher on Newport’s homecoming for either team. The Knights were looking to clinch a playoff…
They came to crash the party.
Four Interlake golfers finished in the top-18 at the KingCo 3A medalist tournament on Oct. 13. The players – Zach Buchanan, Patrick Sato, Andrew Kennedy and Taylor Haddock – finished in the required positions to move on to the 3A district tournament Monday at Harbour Pointe Golf Club; but as a 2A school, the Saints golfers must wait until the spring to play in their district tournament.

Newport football coach Mike Miller says his team realizes the opportunity they have Friday.
With a win over Eastlake Wolves, the Knights assure themselves one of the three KingCo 4A Crest Division playoff spots. While the order of the spots could fluctuate greatly with the remaining two weeks left to play, the Knights are one of just three teams in the division who control their own destiny when it comes to the playoffs.

The game over, the team meeting adjourned, and the family hugged, Cole Graves finally had a chance to breathe for what seemed like the first time all night.
After rushing for 185 yards and two touchdowns on offense and three timely interceptions on defense, the senior couldn’t be blamed for being a little winded after the Rebels 47-34 win over previously unbeaten Interlake.
