Things looked promising for the Wolverine wrestlers at the beginning of day two at the Mat Classic. With three Bellevue grapplers in the semifinal matches, just a win away from championship appearances, it seemed a Wolverine in the finals was all but assured.
Too bad their opponents didn’t see things that way.
Though Matt Casimes, Erik Ovens and Jimmy Trull were all beaten in the semi’s, Bellevue still had its most successful state tournament in 30 years as four out of the eight Wolverines placed.

In the days prior to his team’s loser-out game against Liberty in the opening round of the KingCo 3A tournament, Sammamish coach Wes Newton wanted his players to remember the last time they faced the Patriots.
In that Jan. 29 game, Sammamish let a 20-point halftime lead slip away for a 58-57 loss. This week, Newton sent each player home with a video copy of that game, instructing them to take a good look at it.
When Matt Casimes stared across the mat at his opponent during the 112-pound title bout at Saturday’s 3A Region I Championships, he didn’t see West Seattle’s Louis Wright.
He saw burritos.
“[Teammate] Erik Ovens and I have a bet,” Casimes explained minutes after pinning Wright in 3:14. “Whoever gets the most pins this season buys the other Chipotle. And we all know Chipotle is really good, so I was just trying to add another one.”
Mission accomplished.
Casimes’ cradle pin of Wright made him one of Bellevue’s four regional champions as the Wolverines qualified seven wrestlers for next Saturday’s Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
Bellevue found tremendous success Saturday at Liberty High School, as every returner to the regional meet from last year either stayed the same place or improved on their previous finishes.
The thought had been in my brain for a while, rolling around in my head like a little voice, constantly prodding me.
It all started last summer, when I covered the story of Ed and Linda Sproull, a Bellevue couple who one day decided to live a healthier lifestyle. It wasn’t without its challenges, but within a year the two had lost a combined 130 pounds and were preparing to participate in the Issaquah Triathlon.
Complicating matters for Ed was the fact that, due to a motorcycle accident in 1981, he would be competing with only his right leg.
But that hadn’t stopped Ed in his journey thus far, and it wouldn’t for the race.
The two reigning 4A and 3A state football champions will meet next season as Bellevue will play Skyline on Sept….
