Do we want Congress to tell businesses/organizations what name they can and can’t have for themselves? Sen. Marie Cantwell wants to take the tax-exempt status away from the NFL because it will not force the Washington Redskins football team to change its name.
Three points concern me.
One, the government has no business of dictating the name of a business/organization. If someone is offended, they can sue the Washington team, not try to force the NFL to exert pressure. Many Native Americans are not even offended by the name.
Two, if Congress can use the threat of tax-exempt status to change your name or beliefs, then will religious organizations, other nonprofits, and other businesses be next. This smacks of total government control.
Three, instead of worrying about a business name being politically correct, maybe Cantwell could do some good to take on the NFL to take a stronger stand against domestic violence – if that is of any concern to her. That might be better use of everyone’s time and yield some positive changes that need to be addressed now.
