If you are lucky enough to have a new baby in your lives, listen up. Here are some quick tips to make your home safe.
Long before your little darling is crawling, scooting or toddling around your home, you need to get the house baby-proofed.
OK, let’s start with the windows: Make sure there are no hanging cords from blinds, drapes or window shades. They’re a strangling hazard. Get a product that will safely store the cords in a retractable device.
Remember that babies are climbers — don’t have any furniture near a window that the baby could climb up and then out of. You’ll need window guards, of course.
And if you’ve got bookshelves or chests of drawers – anchor them to the wall with special furniture brackets so climbing kids can’t tip them over.
While we’re at the wall, of course you want to make sure your outlets are all covered, and that there are no electrical wires loose and accessible to teething babies.
Toddlers fall down a lot, and you’ve got to protect them from sharp edges. The coffee table should have corner cushions or table toppers, or trade in the sharp edges for a soft ottoman, and if you have a fireplace, you may want to get a hearth bumper pad or a gate to block access to the fireplace.
Slipcover your upholstered furniture in heavy-duty, natural and washable fabric, in canvas, fleece or denim.
Now to the kitchen: get all your cleaning products and other household liquids out of the lower cabinets and put them up high, out of reach. Ditto for drawers that contain sharp objects or dangerous ones like plastic garbage bags, which can suffocate a child. Put safety latches on all your cabinets and drawers.
Unplug appliances not in use but keep the cords out of reach. And you’ll need knob covers for your stove, and burner covers too.
Don’t forget about safety gates for staircases, and to block access to rooms that are off limits.
